In Europe, every fourth person has some sort of special need. Among the elderly, of whom there are an increasing number of in our aging population, every second person has special needs. A special need could be something permanent, temporary (e.g. after a traffic accident) or stemming from a particular situation (e.g. being in a noisy environment).
Accessibility is not only about people with disabilities, it improves the overall quality and performance of your digital services. An accessible website reaches more customers, is easier to use, creates a more consistent and reliable user experience, reduces legal risks, and improves visibility in search engines and AI-driven discovery (SEO and GEO).
In the public sector, the European Union Directive (EU) 2016/2102 applies.
For products and services, the European Union Directive (EU) 2019/882 applies.
Digital environments must comply with the EN 301 549 standard, which includes WCAG 2.1 AA requirements as well as additional criteria.
Over the past four years, we have monitored the accessibility of Estonian websites and mobile applications in cooperation with the Consumer Protection and Technical Regulatory Authority.
